Easy Canada PR | For Doctors & Physicians

The government of Canada  has made it simpler for foreign-educated physicians to permanently settle in Canada as provinces and territories work to hire and keep more physicians. Doctors from all over the world choose to settle in Canada and work in various communities which would be essential to ensure local access to family physicians due to the aging population of Canada.

To attract and retain more medical professionals, the Canadian government on September 23rd made it easier for foreign-educated medical professionals to get permanent residence in New Glasgow – located in Nova Scotia. Honorable Sean Fraser, The Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship after a meeting at the Aberdeen Hospital along with family physicians and Healthy Pictou County announced changes that had been made to simplify the process for foreign-born physicians to remain in Canada so that they can continue their practice and help support the Canadian healthcare system.

Due to the ‘fee-for-service’ model used in Canada for health care professionals, some physicians have encountered difficulties in applying for permanent residence through Canada’s flagship programs which are distinct from the traditional employer-employee relationship for skilled workers managed under the Express Entry system, this leaves doctors classified as self-employed, which prevents them from meeting the eligibility requirements for permanent residency.

Minister Fraser stated that IRCC had exempted physicians that collaborated with public health authorities on a fee-for-service basis from the existing rules to resolve the issue, the modification also gave physicians access to the country’s economic permanent residence programs and recognized the unique employment model used in the country’s healthcare sector which would allow a bigger percentage of doctors already filling key positions in the healthcare system to attain permanent residence in the country.

To cope with labor shortage the immigration system was modified by the IRCC which enabled foreign nationals already living and working in Canada to permanently settle in the country. Immigration allowed employers to fill thousands of vacant positions across the nation, but the economy only gains if the immigration system is efficient and successful. The IRCC promises to continue collaborating with partners and stakeholders from provinces and territories to further address critical labor shortages in the healthcare industry.

The Honorable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship stated that foreign-born doctors helped keep families healthy and cared for the aging population in his province. Furthermore, they quickly established themselves as neighbors, friends, and fellow community leaders because their abilities are considered valuable resources in the area, and doctors who have been relocated to Nova Scotia or other regions of the country were a win-win situation. So, the announcement gestured the doctors to select Canada as their country of residence permanently, and sent a message that Canada wanted them to stay.

Murray Hill, Chair of Citizens for a Healthy Pictou County mentioned that they want doctors to select and stay in Nova Scotia and praised the federal government for lifting restrictions within their power by collaborating with neighborhood initiatives like Healthy Pictou County and other like-minded grassroot organizations which attracted and kept physicians both locally and internationally, he also acknowledged the difficulty of the situation and thanked Minister Fraser for working tirelessly on behalf of the federal government.
