Your IELTS Test Scores or Results - Myths Vs Reality

An internationally recognized and acknowledged English language competence test is the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). The British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge English all share ownership and management of the test. IELTS evaluates a person's English language proficiency when they apply to migrate to Canada. IELTS are of 2 types: Academic IELTS and General IELTS. If you are applying for Canadian permanent residency, you must take the General IELTS exam only, which satisfies both the IRCC's as well as CLB's (Canada Language Benchmarks) requirements. Academic IELTS is meant for students going for their higher education.

One of the most frequently asked questions by the test takers is whether to take the test through computer or paper and also, which one would be easier. The fact is that whichever ‘test type’ the test taker chooses, the content, number of questions, duration, and the score allotted are the same for both computer and paper-based test.

The basic requirement is that for the computer-based test, the test taker must possess decent typing speed while the paper-based test requires legible handwriting. The key difference between the two is the availability of the test results. Computer based test results are available within 3-5 days of taking the test whereas it can take up to 14 days for the paper-based test results to come. Therefore, many opt for computer-based test over paper-based test.

Validity of your IELTS test results & second language attrition

Your IELTS test results are valid for a period of two years after they become available. When the test result reaches its second year, the IELTS system immediately deactivates the result. The IELTS exam's two-year validity is based on the phenomena of second language attrition.

Second-language attrition, which happens whenever a learner utilizes the second language to a lesser degree, is a steady decrease in the individual's second-language proficiency. Language use may be limited for a variety of reasons, resulting in another language being dominant.

Some IELTS Myths debunked...!

Myth #1: IELTS validity differs across nations. Clarification: NO!!!! The validity period of two years is the same across the world. Myth #2: The IELTS validity period varies depending on whether the test is administered via computers or on paper. Clarification: NO!!!! Regardless of the method used to administer the test, the validity period of two years remains the same. Myth #3: The IELTS validity period for the Academic and General modules is different. Clarification: Regardless of the module, the validity term of ‘two years’ remains unchanged.
