Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Canada’s ministry of immigration, has conducted its second Express Entry draw of the week. This draw was focused on candidates with proficiency in French language. The IRCC issued 300 Invitations to Apply (ITAs), and candidates needed to have a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 486 to be eligible to be invited in this draw.
This draw follows a previous one that took place on October 24, in which a total of 1,548 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 776 were invited to apply for permanent residence. Notably, this was the first Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)-only draw since May 10. It's worth mentioning that the minimum CRS score for PNP draws tends to be higher due to the automatic addition of 600 CRS points to the candidate’s Express Entry profile, post receipt of nomination.
What Is Express Entry & How Does It Work?
Express Entry is an electronic selection system used by the Federal as well as Provincial governments of Canada [to select], as well as designated Canadian employers [to nominate] candidates for Canadian permanent residence under three of its popular economic [skilled] immigration programs:
Candidates who are eligible for any of the above programs are given a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in the Express Entry Pool. It is based on their Core/Human capital factors such as age, work experience, education, and language ability in English and/or French, etc. And, based on scores, candidates are periodically invited (or nominated) for permanent residence.
What is the new category-based selection in Express Entry?
Earlier this year, IRCC implemented draw categories that shifted the focus away from the CRS score as the primary determinant for issuing ITAs. A new legislation passed in June 2022 granted the immigration minister the power to invite candidates who can fulfill economic requirements in Canada or contribute to the promotion of the French language, without being restricted by certain criteria.
As a result, in May of the same year, IRCC unveiled six additional draw categories for Express Entry candidates who possessed either a high level of proficiency in the French language or had work experience in specific areas.
To date, Canada has invited over 10,000 candidates through category-specific selection draws on ten separate occasions, since June. It's important to note that all these candidates were already part of the Express Entry selection system.
