Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducted consecutive Express Entry draws recently. Though it is not common for Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to conduct adjacent Express Entry draws, the gap of almost 1 month justifies the draw frequency. Almost 5 days back, IRCC had announced that it would resume express entry selection soon. A total of 3,200 invitations were issued in the first draw [on 19 September], which was an All-Program draw, meaning, no specific category/stream was announced for this draw. To have qualified for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in this draw, candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 531.
On the very next day, i.e., on September 20, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held its second Express Entry draw of the week. A total of 1,000 candidates were invited to apply for permanent residence in this draw, and they were employed in transport-related occupational categories. It was a categories-specific draw. The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) required to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in this draw was 435.
This summer saw an increased frequency of Express Entry draws compared to previous years, mainly due to the introduction of category-based invitation rounds. Nevertheless, there hasn’t been a draw since the last all-program selection round on August 15, when 4,300 candidates were selected. On September 18, IRCC confirmed that Express Entry draws will resume this week.
On May 31, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced six fresh categories for potential inclusion in category-based selection rounds within the Express Entry selection system. Among these categories, one is tailored for Express Entry candidates with strong French language skills, while the remaining five are designed for candidates with work experience in specific sectors. On June 28, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) initiated the first batch of category-based selection invitations, targeting candidates with healthcare professional backgrounds. Subsequently, there have been additional draws for candidates in STEM professions, trade occupations, and those with proficiency in the French language.
Express Entry is an electronic selection system used by the Federal as well as Provincial governments of Canada [to select], as well as designated Canadian employers [to nominate] candidates for Canadian permanent residence under three of its popular economic [skilled] immigration programs:
Candidates eligible for any of the above programs are given a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in the Express Entry selection system. This score [CRS score] is based on various factors. Core/Human capital factors such as age, work experience, education; spouse factors, etc. And, based on scores, candidates are periodically invited (or nominated) for permanent residence.
Candidates awaiting an Invitation to Apply (ITA) through ‘Category-Based Selection’ must still be part of the Express Entry selection system, and it is highly beneficial to maximize their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score since IRCC will continue to rank candidates against each other based on their CRS scores.
IRCC has emphasized that these new categories serve the dual purpose of addressing critical job vacancies in high-demand sectors of Canada’s workforce and contributing to the strengthening of the country’s economy. The selection of these categories followed consultations with provincial governments, business associations, and other partners and stakeholders within the IRCC network.
