The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is intended to help you secure work permit, study permit, or migrating (obtaining permanent residence) in Canada. During the IELTS test, your English language listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills are evaluated. IELTS scores are assigned a grade between 1 and 9. The British Council, IDP IELTS, and Cambridge University Press & Assessment share ownership of IELTS.

The IELTS test material is based on real-life scenarios. It accommodates candidates from all backgrounds equally and impartially. The test report form plays a pivotal  role in the Canadian immigration process and is accepted by the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada). Despite preparing for the test, many tend to make mistakes that might affect their scores. This article discusses some of such mistakes and they could be prevented.

Two modes of the IELTS test

Whether to take a test on paper or a computer has been one of the commonly asked questions. However, many test takers find it difficult to make this choice. The answer is quite simple. You must understand what suits you the best. The focus should be on legible handwriting if you choose a paper-based test, and swift typing speed if you select a computer-based test. However, since the results are available within 3–5 days, many candidates choose computer-based testing over paper-based testing.

5 common mistakes that you must avoid at any cost…!

Talking too much or being over-confident during the speaking test: you may not have heard this before, but this based on our years of experience training people. Some test takers approach the test as if they are on a crucial assignment. At any chance, they will talk as much as they can and brag. When the examiner asks a candidate for their name, many end up extending their response unnecessarily. The problem is that this frustrates the examiner who has a job to perform and must strive to get through all of the questions. Your fluency may suffer greatly as a result. Your fluency score will begin to decline if you continue adding “uh,” “um,” and “er” at the end of every phrase.

Studying hard but not getting better: many students who spend year after year studying IELTS, yet never seem to improve. Despite their diligent study, they show little progress. The possible explanation is that they are concentrating on test strategies rather than on English proficiency. Furthermore, demotivation sets in, and they stop progressing. You are currently at the most challenging part of the marathon which is learning English—running slowly uphill—so keep up the good effort and you will succeed.

Unable to comprehend the band descriptors: there is a simple technique to verify information regarding IELTS, if you are unsure whether to believe what someone provides you. It is stated in the band’s description that, the information you actually require is contained in it. So, use them as your guide by printing them out, putting them up, and constantly reviewing them.

Misinterpretation of the IELTS writing task 2 question: similar to how overviews pose the most challenge for Writing Task 1, misreading the question poses the biggest challenge for Writing Task 2. However, this is an area on which test takers should concentrate the most. If you answer the question incorrectly, you will receive a task accomplishment band of 3, 4, 5, or maybe 6.

Poor pronunciation progress: many test takers spend a lot of time focusing on their vocabulary and grammar when they should be focusing mostly on pronunciation. Your flawless grammar and vocabulary are useless if no one can comprehend what you are saying. This occurs because pronunciation differs slightly from other abilities. Since grammar and vocabulary are mental muscles, you may strengthen them. It is far more difficult to modify your jaw muscles after they have become set.
