IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a standardized English language proficiency test that is accepted and recognized around the world. It is jointly owned and managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge English. IELTS assesses the language ability of an individual who is looking for an opportunity to migrate to a country where English is their native language.  There are two modules in IELTS – Academic IELTS and General IELTS. However, if you are applying for Permanent residency in Canada, you must take up General IELTS which meets the standards of IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) and CLB (Canada Language Benchmarks).

One of the frequently asked questions has been whether to take a paper based or computer-based test. If you take up paper-based test, then the focus needs to be on legible handwriting and if you choose computer-based, your focus should be on good typing speed. However, many opt for computer-based test over paper-based test as the results are declared within 3 -5 days. Irrespective of the test taken, the scores for IELTS are between bands 0 and 9 for each module.

The Four Modules of IELTS GT

The Reading Module is designed to test a wide range of reading skills and comprises of 3 sections and a total of 40 questions with a duration of 60 minutes. The focus of the reading module should be on hunting information from the passage as well as the answers may be specific and detailed. Therefore, the test taker must read to comprehend.

The Listening Module assesses a test taker’s ability to understand and follow the development of ideas, opinions, and attitudes of the speaker. The module is divided into 4 parts with 40 questions with a duration of 40 minutes. The focus of the listening module should be on the ability to understand different accents as IELTS is an international test with the recordings of various native speakers.

The Writing Module is a creative writing task based on general interest which consists of letter writing and essay writing with a duration of 60 minutes. The focus of the writing module is on the ability to use knowledge, example, and experience to enhance the quality of writing.

The Speaking Module is designed to assess the use of spoken English which consists of 3 sections with a duration of 11 to 14 minutes. This test is conducted by an IELTS examiner. The focus of the speaking module is on the ability to use the language with consistency and also to express ideas in a logical manner.

The 3 ‘P’s as you progress | Practice ⇒ Prepare ⇒ Perform

The most important element before taking IELTS is thorough practice with the help of mock tests and various resources available online. There are different kinds of questions asked in IELTS with regards to reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Therefore, it is important to prepare for these questions regularly. Finally, on the day of the test, keep a positive attitude and perform well for each question.
