Canada is the second largest country in the world with an area occupying roughly two-fifths of the continent of North America which experience a swift recovery from COVID-19 along with the other major economies. However, the Canadian economy has currently experienced a severe labour shortage that could create uncertainty for both businesses and workers in the country.

Honourable Sean Fraser, The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced Canada’s Immigration Levels Plan for the year 2023–2025, the plan stated to use immigration as a tactic to assist businesses in finding and attracting various skills that would be required in important areas including health care, skilled trades, manufacturing, and technology for controlled social and economic issues that Canada would face in the future.

Although Canada had gained over 405,000 newcomers last year (the highest number the country had ever welcomed) the government has decided to maintain its aspiration by setting new targets of 465,000 permanent residents in 2023, 485,000 in 2024, and 500,000 in 2025. Moreover, the initiative also focused on drawing immigrants to various parts of the nation, including small towns and rural areas.

With a particular emphasis on regional immigration, the strategy would be set up on existing efforts for an improved immigration system and increased benefits of immigration to communities across the nation, particularly fostering the vibrancy of Francophone towns outside of Quebec.

Programs promoting regional economic immigration, such as the Provincial Nominee Programs are crucial in the long-term development of the nation and therefore the present year strategy included a year-over-year increase to support the provinces and territories in attracting qualified immigrants who are required to meet the labour shortage and demographic concerns in various areas.

Improvements were made in the past year to address major problems encountered by people utilizing the immigration system. However, to further speed up the process and provide consumers with the service they expected and deserved, the government of Canada has pledged to simplify and digitalize the whole immigration system.

The program restored family ties and met Canada’s humanitarian obligations, and helped Canada maintain its position as one of the top talent destinations in the world, which also laid the groundwork for future economic growth.
